UChicago CASE membership categories grant progressive privileges to its members. Please review these categories carefully prior to submitting your membership application.

CASE Staff Member or Postdoc at-Large

Privileges: As a UChicago CASE Staff/Postdoc at-Large*, you receive the following privileges:

  • Access to UChicago facilities and the library
  • Ability to charge your time to grants without a subcontract
  • Access to mail forwarding, VPN, Wireless Networking, Wireless Networking Secure, Web Proxy, and Box

*Note: CASE Staff/Postdoc at-Large appointments are linked to the supervisor’s CASE status; CASE Staff cannot have PI eligibility status.

Application Requirements:

  • Receipt of home employer pre-approval documents
  • Completed, submitted UChicago CASE Application in Workday
  • CV (NSF format preferred)
  • Letter of Support (LoS) from CASE Sponsor Member
  • Approval from UChicago CASE

CASE (Senior) Scientists/Scholars-at-Large

Privileges: As a UChicago CASE Senior Scientist or Scientist/Scholar at-Large, you will have additional privileges:

  • Serve as a PI or co-investigator on grant applications at the University
  • Purchase equipment via the University for use on University-administered grants
  • Hire and supervise staff at the University*

*Note: Scientist/Scholar at-Large appointments do not include supervision of or co-mentoring UChicago students or postdocs. If this privilege is required for proposals or funding, please seek Scientist Affiliated with a Unit appointment membership.

Application Requirements:

  • Receipt of home employer pre-approval documents
  • Completed, submitted UChicago CASE Application in Workday
  • CV (NSF format preferred)
  • Letter of Support (LoS) from Supervisor
  • Approval from UChicago CASE

CASE (Senior) Scientists/Scholars Affiliated with a Unit

Privileges: As a UChicago CASE Senior Scientist or Scientist Affiliated with a Unit, you add a further privilege:

  • Co-supervise and co-mentor UChicago students and postdocs*

*Note: Privilege specific to CASE Affiliate appointments. Does not apply to at-large appointments.

Application Requirements*:

  • Faculty Sponsor Letter of Support (LoS)
  • In-depth committee and/or faculty review within the Department or Division
  • Completed, submitted UChicago CASE Application in Workday
  • CV (NSF format preferred)
  • Approval from the UChicago Division, CASE and the Provost Office

*Note: Application requirements are most extensive for this membership category. CASE Affiliated with Unit appointments require an in-depth faculty, Dean, and Provost Office review for initial vetting prior to CASE approval. The approval process specifics vary by Division (for contacts, see below). Appointees are expected to have an established affiliation with a Division/School and demonstrated support of a Faculty Mentor.
